Product Overview
The 5742NSG is a 12-volt permanent-magnet direct-drive starter with counter-clockwise rotation and a 16-tooth steel pinion gear, for Briggs & Stratton 7-22 HP engines from 1972 to 2006 found in lawn tractors and garden equipment, including Cub Cadet and John Deere models. The SG designation marks the heavy-duty steel-gear upgrade of the standard 5742N. It replaces Briggs & Stratton 497595, 497594, 391423, 390838 and 41022003.
Each unit is remanufactured to OE dimensions with renewed brushes, bushings and seals, and bench-tested for rotation, pinion engagement and current draw before packing. The steel drive gear resists the tooth wear that ends the life of OE plastic-gear units. Backed by a 12-month warranty.
